Canterbury Images

Canterbury Images - Castle Street, Canterbury, Kent. c1930

We probably hold one of the largest photographic archives of the City of Canterbury in the world. This collection includes many rare, unusual and unique images, as well as views of the city’s more familiar landmarks, such as the Cathedral and the Westgate. Prominent in the archive are the photographic records of numerous buildings long-since demolished (lost to the blitz, redevelopment and road building), including many working class streets and dwellings that other collections do not cover. The archive begins in the 1860s, and comes right up to date to include the best of the city's post-war buildings, many of which have recently been swept away for a new generation of overscale quasi-vernacular developments. Often, we will have multiple views of the same subject, as detailed on the ‘Photo Collections’ page.

These photographs would be of undoubted interest to local people, both past and present, and the more discriminating tourist, as well as anyone currently looking into their own family history, with ancestors who once lived in Canterbury.  To this end, we have decided to open up the archive to the public, and allow people to purchase copies of the pictures.

Images can be supplied, either as digital scans on photographic paper, or as digital scans saved to CDR. In the vast majority of cases, the pictures will be to a high professional standard.  The costs will be £5.00 per image, plus postage and packing at cost. Discounts will be given for 5 or more images purchased. Some of the more recent images will be in colour. We can supply worldwide, and all prints and discs will be despatched in reinforced envelopes.

Therefore, if you are interested in any particular street or building, please email us with any relevant details. We are happy to e-mail low-grade samples of any image, or the original photographs can be viewed at The Chaucer Bookshop in Canterbury, by prior arrangement with us.

Please note that all quoted prices do not include permission to reproduce in a book, or any other media form, unless already agreed with us.  However, subject to copyright, a fee for publication can be negotiated.

And finally, due to a severe shortage of space, we are being forced to sell a vast collection of paper-wrapped, glass-plate negatives from a defunct Canterbury newspaper.  They are stored in wooden boxes and roughly date from the period 1948 to 1956.  There are literally thousands of them, and they feature every aspect of local newspaper coverage.  If you are interested in viewing the items, and/or making an offer, please e-mail us.

Below, are a few examples of the type of image we can provide.  For more samples, including some from other topics, please go to the ‘Photo Collections’ page.
